Book Club Discussion Questions

  • For much of the novel, Robin is morally conflicted about her association with the landlords: she disapproves of their actions, yet she needs to act like them to survive. Robin says she despises Four Points, so why is she resistant to the landlords’ don’t-bother-us ethos?

  • The landlords are harsh, but many of their tenants are undeniably destructive. Do you feel any measure of empathy for men like Tom Frost?

  • Cindy and Steph are both good friends to Robin. Could they ever be friends with each other?

  • This isn’t a love story. Or is it?

  • The men in the Landlords Association dismiss Micheline Royer as “crazy,” but she perseveres with her plan to open an art gallery. What lessons might Robin learn from Micheline?

  • Have you left your hometown, or have you stayed? What happens when you encounter people from your past? Do you welcome such reunions, or dread them?

  • Robin and Cindy view encounters with people from the past as horrific and quotidien, respectively. How have their differing perspectives shaped their lives?

  • Have you ever had a friend from the past reemerge during a difficult time? Do you agree with the claim that “old friends are the best friends”? How do old and new bonds differ?

  • Have you ever been a landlord or a tenant? Share a story about your worst apartment, worst tenant, or worst landlord.

  • What’s next for Robin, Cindy, and Four Points? And what will life be like for Haley and Amber as they grow up?
